The FDA's approval of silicone breast implants reverses a 14-year-old decision that restricted access. Breast implant experts Roxanne Guy, MD , and Laurie Casas, MD, will host a media briefing to discuss what the decision means for women, what the studies have shown, the role organized plastic surgery will play, and next steps. They will be joined by breast implant patients who are willing to discuss their experiences.
Organized plastic surgery applauds the FDA's decision to return silicone implants to the U.S. market and is committed to patient safety and education. Board-certified plastic surgeons have always advocated that science determine the availability of silicone implants, not emotion and special interests. The FDA's decision gives U.S. women access to the same implants women in more than 75 countries already have.
